Hi guys!

First off, thank you to everyone who stuck by Chrissi Emery Photography even in the months with no updates from me. I've missed this business so incredibly much and it feels amazing to finally be able to take some time and update everyone about whats been going on.

This summer has been a summer of firsts for me. As many of you know I am 20 years old and I just finished getting my art history degree, I got my first car all by myself, and also had the opportunity to get an amazing second job.

At the beginning of the summer with my new car, I dreamt of being able to drive everywhere with my nikon and take my business to the next level. Well ofcourse life doesnt always listen to your plan and the free time I had was no longer there. I ended up working 12-13 hour days at my two other jobs and by the time I got home, I didnt want to do anything besides sleeping.

This wasnt a bad thing necessarily, and I learned what it was like to really be on your own and work all day, everyday. This summer was a pretty big milestone in my adulthood and eventually my hard work payed off and I got promoted at my second job. With this promotion, I have a much better set schedrule which gives me a lot more time to get back to the thing I really love. With all these new experiences I got from my new work life, I feel that I can direct my buisness more confidently. I've gotten the chance to really appreciate the things you all do for me, and im ready to start updating my page weekly again.

I am now taking emails for any inquiries including baby showers, senior portraits, and ofcourse any events you may need from me. I cant thank you all enough for the support I've gotten throughout my absence. Hope you are all happy with the new work! As always, please leave feedback.

Next Generation

Hello Readers!

First, I'm sorry about the lack of blogs. My website has been down for about 3 weeks now, and I had to fix everything! With that being said, I am super excited about this blog for this week.

Last Friday I had the honor to go to Exeter High School and talk to three different classes all about the pros/cons of having a business, what made me pursue photography and a lot more. :)

A few months ago I emailed my sophmore English teacher. I remember her having us write a paper on what we wanted to do for the rest of our lives, and all the steps to get there. Well I wrote mine about being a photographer(of course) and I always think back on how helpful that paper truly was. I thought about emailing her and telling her thank you, so I finally did. With that, she asked me to come back to High School and talk to some students about everything.

Honestly, I was terrified at first. I practiced speeches infront of my webcam and made all types of flash cards. With all that preperation, I didn't use any of it when it finally came time to talk to the students. It was so rewarding to talk to kids that may be interested in photography or even starting a business in a different field. They asked great questions, and some were even taking the same steps I did when I was that age. I had a great time and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

I hope everyone finds something they truly love to do, and I hope they can pass that message on to anyone that wants to hear it.

The Ripple Angle

Hey guys! Happy "Blog" Sunday!:D

Originally I was going to write a completely different article but due to the weather not being very clear, I had to brain storm some quick ideas. What I eventually came up with is, "water drip photos" or slow motion photography. I've never tried it before nor have I given it much research but I was actually quite happy with the results.

So first for this I used:

-A clear bowl

-Red food coloring (you dont have to use food coloring it just helps you see the water better)

-And the most obvious my sink plus counter.

Now if I had more time I probably would have set up things a little differently but for now this did just fine. I set my cameras exposure to 1/60th, the aperature to f/5.6 and I used my 55 mm lens on this. I had my camera also set to continuous shooting. With all the camera details out of the way I played around with the sink until I got the right speed for water drops. I had a lot of photos that got sent straight to trash, but I had a few that were exactly what I wanted.

This is super fun to do and creates great photos, try it out! Tell me how you capture "water drip" pictures if you have a different way :)

Thank you always, for reading. Have a great week everyone!

Snowed In

“Well, I know now. I know a little more how much a

simple thing like a snowfall can mean to a person”

― Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

As many of you know, we got covered in a very heavy snow fall this weekend (1/17-1/19). I knew it would be a perfect weekend for photos, But I wasn't sure what I would be looking for. I was thinking of the several locations around the seacoast that would be beautiful to photograph especially with the natural snow globe effect. What I wasn't thinking about was the roads. They ended up being to icy to really go anywhere! So I declared myself "snowed in" and starting brainstorming new photo ideas.

I started with taking 10 shots of my green tea smoking from the hot liquid(thats proof above). I then realized there is no good way to make tea look good and I would just have to bundle up and face the snow.

2 Sweaters, 1 jacket, pair of snow pants, mittens and a hat later; I was finally ready. I wasn't sure what to photograph, I mean everything with snow on it is naturally beautiful but I was bored of just going to a location, taking a photo, going home and uploading it. I wanted to experience this snow storm the best I could.

I took pictures of roads, trees lined with a white coat, I captured the roaring sunset behind the snowbanks. The more time I spent out there, the more I got into that "little kid happiness" that gets created after a big snowfall. I heard laughter echoing from the neighbors, the sounds of snowballs flying through the air and the sounds of shovels scraping against the ground to clear paths for their morning routines.

After a while I brought the camera back inside and wandered back out. Then after about 12 years, I made a (very poorly done) snowman and even entered a snowball fight. I realized that snow storms are so much more than perfect nature photo ops for photographers that witness them. With snowstorms you capture a perfect place for a snow fort, the battle fields of a snow ball fight, and the base of a snow man.

I've learned that even though I only got a handful of "post worthy photos" I understand what snow fall really means to every generation. I loved being "snowed in" this weekend, and I would do it all over again during the next snow storm! I hope everyone had a wonderful, safe weekend! If you have any fun memories from this snowy weekend, please comment them below! I would love to read about them :).

Birds Eye View

This weekend I decided to try out something I've never tried with photography, birds. When I see pictures of these beautiful birds I've always thought well that seems easy, just go outside with a nice lens and there you go. Well this past week, I got a nicer lens and it was far from easy. What isn't into consideration when seeing not just bird photos, but any type of animal photos, is how much patience it truly takes. I thought I would stroll outside and find birds like that, but it actually ended up being so much more than that.

While taking bird photos, you can't just walk through the woods. You may think your being sneaky, and no birds will hear you but trust me, there will always be some stick in the way that will make the slightest snap and there goes your chances. Instead, you have to find a comfortable spot and wait. Could be minutes or on the verge of hours, but trust me itll be worth it.

While you wait you may start to notice absolute beauty around you. Even I take for granted just the simple things in my backyard. Atleast I did until this past weekend. Not only was I taking (not the best) photos of birds but I was capturing knotted trees, macros of berries and details I would never even notice before. Then sooner than I thought birds started to come out. I was in awe with how the woods around me came alive that I forgot to pick up my camera for most of it! Haha

The quote I had with the photo I posted on facebook today said, "In order to see birds it is neccessary to become a part of the silence." I believe Robert Lynd hit the nail on the head with that sentence. I became part of the silence, no phones going off and no talking. Only the soft sound of my fingers wrapped around my lens and tapping the capture button to the absolute sweet show of mother nature.

I'm not sure if this post fits under the appreciation for bird photographers all over the world, or under the loving nature type of blog but either way, I recommend anyone looking for a new experience to try this. Even if you dont have the nicest equipment that doesn't matter. On the next sunny, beautiful day go outside and tune out the world and notice the smaller details. Trust me.
